LumiSpa iO Running Cost: What a Year of Heads and Cleanser Costs

If you already own an ageLOC LumiSpa iO, running it costs roughly $410 to $486 a year — about $34 to $41 a month — and nearly all of that is two items: a silicone treatment head at $55 and Treatment Cleanser at $38 a bottle. Nothing else on the device wears out, so those two prices are the whole running cost.

Below is the arithmetic, what Nu Skin actually prints about how long each item lasts, and the point at which the running cost makes the device a bad buy.

The only two things you replace

The treatment head — $55

The silicone head is the part that touches your face, and it is the one item with a replacement interval Nu Skin puts in print. On its US treatment head page, Nu Skin writes: "A treatment head is designed to last for at least three months when used twice a day."

That is the figure to plan against — four heads a year at $55 if you replace on schedule. Note the wording: at least three months, and that interval is written for twice-daily use. Nu Skin does not print a figure for once-daily use, so we will not invent one.

Heads cost $55 whichever you choose. The blue head comes in Normal, Gentle and Firm; the black head in Normal and Gentle; the rose gold head in all three. Color is cosmetic. Firmness is the decision that matters, and we cover it in the heads, cleansers and Accent guide.

The Treatment Cleanser — $38

Here we have to be straight with you: Nu Skin does not print how long a bottle lasts. What it does print is the bottle size — 75 mL (2.5 fl oz) — and the directions, which read: "Moisten your face and then dispense a dime sized amount of cleanser onto your hand."

So the bottle life below is our arithmetic, not a Nu Skin figure. A dime-sized dollop is in the region of half a milliliter, which is about a milliliter a day at two uses. That puts a 75 mL bottle somewhere around ten weeks if you are sparing and nearer seven if you are generous — five to seven bottles a year, or $190 to $266. Your hand is the variable, and nobody can price that for you.

All six formulas — Normal/Combo, Sensitive, Dry, Oily, Acne and Charcoal — are the same 75 mL and the same $38, so switching formulas changes nothing about the cost. Which one to pick is covered in the cleanser formula guide.

One thing worth knowing before you budget: the cleanser is not optional. Nu Skin prints that its Treatment Cleansers "are the only formulations tested and approved for use with LumiSpa iO", and adds a footnote on the device listing that "All claims and benefits come from use with an ageLOC LumiSpa Treatment Cleanser." You cannot cut the $38 line by using the face wash in your bathroom cabinet and still be inside what Nu Skin describes.

A year, itemized

Item Unit price How often Per year
Treatment head $55 Every 3 months (Nu Skin's printed interval, twice-daily use) $220
Treatment Cleanser, 75 mL $38 5 to 7 bottles (our estimate, not Nu Skin's) $190 to $266
Face only, steady year $410 to $486

If you are buying the device this year too

The LumiSpa iO device with a Treatment Cleanser is $241, and Nu Skin's US listing names three things in the box: the device, the magnetic charger and a Normal treatment head. So your first head and first cleanser are already paid for.

That makes year one $241 for the kit, three more heads at $165, and four to six more cleansers at $152 to $228 — $558 to $634 all in. If you already have cleanser at home, the device on its own is $229, though at $12 less than the bundle it only makes sense if you genuinely do not need a bottle.

If you use it once a day instead of twice

The cleanser line roughly halves — two to four bottles, $76 to $152. The head line we cannot halve honestly, because Nu Skin's three-month figure is written for twice-daily use and it publishes nothing for once a day. Plan on the same four heads and treat anything longer as a bonus.

Worth saying plainly: Nu Skin's benefit claims are written around twice-daily use as well. Its printed claims for the device are "Instantly softer and smoother skin after one use" and "Seven clinically proven beauty benefits that amplify over time", alongside "Two minutes, twice a day is all it takes". Once a day saves you money and steps outside the routine those claims describe.

If you own the Accent

The LumiSpa iO Accent is the eye-area head, $92 as a one-off. Its consumable is the silicone tip, and Nu Skin is specific here: "Be sure to replace your Accent tips every 3 months." Tips come two to a pack at $21, so four tips a year is two packs — $42. Add IdealEyes at $55 if you use the cream Nu Skin pairs with it.

A small ordering note

Standard US shipping is free on orders of $99 or more. A head and a cleanser together come to $93, which lands you $6 short — so it is usually worth adding a second cleanser bottle, or ordering the head and two bottles at $131, rather than paying shipping twice in a quarter. Stock is sealed and shipped from Nu Skin's own warehouse.

Who should not buy it

This is the part most pages skip, so here it is.

  • Anyone who cannot live with a $35-to-$40-a-month consumable. The $241 is not the cost of the LumiSpa iO. The cost is the $241 plus roughly $450 a year, indefinitely. If that figure makes you wince, buy the $38 cleanser on its own and use it by hand. Nu Skin's directions allow it, and it is a legitimate routine — just not the one the device claims are written about.
  • Anyone who will not use it twice a day. Both the printed head life and the printed benefits assume twice daily. If you know yourself and the honest answer is three times a week, the device is an expensive timer.
  • Anyone who wants to keep their own cleanser. Nu Skin says its formulas are the only ones tested and approved for the device. If you are attached to a face wash you already love, the running cost is a fight you will keep having.
  • Anyone shopping for a one-off purchase. A head every three months and a bottle every two is a subscription in all but name, even though nothing here signs you up for one.
