There are exactly three decisions in the LumiSpa system, and new owners routinely confuse two of them. Treatment heads are graded by firmness — Gentle, Normal and Firm. Cleansers are chosen by skin type — there are six formulas. And the Accent is a separate small device for the eye area, not a fourth head for your face. This page covers all three, and what you can safely skip.
What Nu Skin actually publishes about the heads
We quote the manufacturer here rather than writing our own version. Anything beyond these lines would be ours, not theirs. Nu Skin's one-sentence description of each of the three heads is reproduced under its own heading below.
On the material they print: "Gentle, nonabrasive silicone surfaces contains antimicrobial silver and is more hygienic than brushes commonly used with other devices." And on how the head works with the device: it is "made of nonabrasive silicone, works specifically with your ageLOC LumiSpa iO device at the precise frequency needed to promote skin renewal."
The benefits Nu Skin lists for the head are the same three they list for the device: "Softer and smoother after one use", "Seven clinically proven benefits", and "Benefits intensify over time."
The three heads, in practice
Gentle
Nu Skin's line: "The Gentle treatment head is our gentlest choice and is great for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin."
Who tends to end up here: skin that flushes easily, skin that is currently breaking out, skin that has become thinner and more reactive with age, and anyone who has been put off devices before by a brush that felt like sandpaper. It is also the sensible head to start on if you are nervous, because you can always move up.
How to use it well: let the device carry its own weight. Pressing harder does not make a gentle head behave like a firm one; it just makes the treatment uncomfortable. If your skin is settling after a reaction or a procedure, start at once a day in the evening and add the morning treatment once you know how your skin responds.
Normal
Nu Skin's line: "The Normal treatment head is the standard choice and is designed for most skin types." Of the Normal head specifically they add: "It's designed to remove makeup and impurities and is the perfect choice for most skin types."
Who tends to end up here: most people, including most combination skin — an oilier forehead and nose with drier cheeks is the ordinary case, not a special one. If you genuinely do not know your skin type, this is where to begin and you can adjust later.
How to use it well: this is the head to judge the others against. Give it a few weeks of consistent twice-daily use before deciding it is too much or not enough. Skin that is simply adjusting to a new routine can look busier for a fortnight, and switching heads in week one tells you nothing.
Firm
Nu Skin's line: "The Firm treatment head is for those who want the most aggressive experience but is not recommended for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin."
Who tends to end up here: resilient, oilier skin that finds the Normal head underwhelming after a few months. Note the second half of Nu Skin's sentence, because it is unusually direct for a product page — if you are breaking out or your skin is sensitive, this is not the head for you, however tempting "most aggressive" sounds.
How to use it well: use less pressure, not more. A firmer head with a heavy hand is the one combination likely to leave skin looking irritated. If you see redness that has not settled by the time you have finished your moisturizer, step back to Normal.

When to switch
Your skin is not fixed. It changes with the season, with hormones, with medication, and with whatever else is going on in a given year. The heads are interchangeable precisely so you are not stuck with a decision you made once.
Step down to a gentler head when:
- Your skin has turned drier or more reactive, which often happens through the forties and fifties
- You are in a patch of redness or breakouts — Nu Skin puts acne-prone skin on the Gentle head, not the Firm one
- Winter has arrived and your skin feels tighter than it did in August
- You have had a facial treatment and your skin is still recovering
Step up when:
- Your skin has become oilier, through hormones or summer humidity
- Your current head has stopped feeling like it is doing much, and you have ruled out a head that is simply overdue for replacement
One caution worth stating plainly: if you are switching because you want faster results, switch cleansers or fix your consistency first. A firmer head is not a shortcut.
Care and replacement
- Cleaning: rinse the head under running water after every use. The silicone is nonabrasive and carries antimicrobial silver, and there are no bristles for residue to sit in. A weekly wash with a mild soap is plenty.
- Replacement: Nu Skin states that "a treatment head is designed to last for at least three months when used twice a day." That is their figure, not ours, and it is the one to plan around.
- Storage: leave it on the device or somewhere dry. A damp drawer is the one place it should not live.
Do the different heads have different motors or settings? No. The device provides the movement — Nu Skin's patented Micropulse Oscillation Technology — and the head differs in how firm it is. Gentle, Normal and Firm are three firmnesses of the same nonabrasive silicone.
The Accent, for the eye area
Short answer, before anything else: these are not two versions of the same product. The ageLOC LumiSpa iO is the full-face cleansing and treatment device. The ageLOC LumiSpa iO Accent is the small one made for the skin around the eyes.
Nu Skin's entire published US description of the Accent is two sentences:
"Get bright, ready-for-anything eyes with ageLOC LumiSpa iO Accent. If you have the ageLOC LumiSpa IdealEyes, get even better results when you pair it with the ageLOC LumiSpa iO Accent."
That is the entire claim Nu Skin publishes for the Accent in the United States. It tells you two useful things and no more: the Accent is about the eye area, and Nu Skin expects you to use it with their IdealEyes eye cream rather than on its own.

Nu Skin describes the Accent and IdealEyes as designed for each other, and in both directions. This is their wording for IdealEyes:
"Goodbye bags, hello bright eyes. ageLOC® LumiSpa® IdealEyes® Activating Eye Cream is specially designed to work with ageLOC® LumiSpa® Accent to deliver powerful benefits to the delicate skin around your eyes."
"Just 30 seconds on each eye area provides immediate hydration, visible firming, brightening, and smoothing to stop the look of tired, stressed eyes in its tracks."
Their printed directions are worth reading before you decide you need both, because they tell you how the two are meant to be used together: "Use before applying moisturizer every morning and night on clean skin. Gently apply under the eyebrows, corners prone to crow's feet, and under the eyes. Avoid direct eye contact. For best results, massage each eye area using ageLOC LumiSpa Accent for 30 seconds, avoiding eyelids."
Read plainly, that says the cream can go on by hand and the Accent is what makes it a treatment rather than a smear. It also says the eyelids are off limits, which is the sort of detail worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
Which to buy first
If it is one purchase and not two, buy the iO. It covers every part of the face the Accent does not, and the rest of the range is built around it — heads, cleansers, the routine itself. The Accent answers one question, well, for one small area.
The order reverses in one case. If the iO is already on your bathroom shelf and the complaint you actually have is tired-looking eyes, then the Accent and IdealEyes together are $147.00 against the $241.00 you already spent, and they are the part of the routine you are currently doing with your fingers.
The full stack — device, Accent, IdealEyes — is $388.00 before any replacement heads or cleanser, and there is no reason to spend it in one go. The device and cleanser first, the eye pair later, is a perfectly sensible way round.
There is no Nu Skin comparison between these two products. They do not publish a statement that one replaces the other, a percentage for either, or a number of weeks after which you should expect anything. The only times they print are usage instructions — two minutes twice a day for the device, 30 seconds an eye for the Accent with IdealEyes.
The six cleanser formulas
The cleanser is not soap — it is half the treatment. Nu Skin describes each formula as one that "treats and cleanses" skin, and lists "Results intensify when used with ageLOC LumiSpa iO device" among the cleanser's own benefits. Device and cleanser are sold as separate things but designed as a pair.
An oily-skin formula used on dry skin tends to leave it feeling tight. That is the mistake we see most often, and it is an easy one to undo — the cleansers are bought separately from the device, so switching costs you one bottle, not a machine.
Normal / Combo
For: generally balanced skin — not especially oily or dry, little sensitivity, few breakouts.
Nu Skin's own line for this one is that it "treats and cleanses normal to combination skin without disrupting your skin's natural moisture barrier." If you have no particular concern, this is the default.
Dry
For: skin that feels tight after cleansing, shows flakiness, or looks dull for want of moisture.
Cleanses without leaving skin stripped.
Worth knowing later in life: a lot of women tell us their skin feels drier than it used to after menopause. If you have always used Normal or Oily and it has started to feel harsh, Dry is the obvious thing to try before you conclude the device is not for you.
Oily
For: skin that shines by the middle of the day, particularly across the T-zone, with enlarged pores or blackheads.
A deeper clean for excess oil. The simplest test: if shine is back within an hour or two of washing, start here rather than with Normal.
Sensitive
For: skin that reacts easily, goes red with standard cleansers, or is generally reactive.
The gentlest of the six.
If you are new to the device and unsure how your skin will respond, start here. You can move to a more targeted formula once you know the device suits you. That is the cautious route and we would rather recommend it than have you send the device back.
Acne
For: regular breakouts or persistent congestion. Suitable for teenage and adult acne.
Give it a fair run. Skin can look worse before it looks better whenever an acne formula is introduced, and giving up at that point is the most common reason people decide a product did not work.
Charcoal
For: congested or oily skin wanting a deeper clean than the Oily formula provides.
The one most often missed — plenty of guides still list only five formulas, so if you have read elsewhere that there are five, this is the one they left out.

How heads and cleansers pair
These are two different systems and people routinely confuse them. The head is chosen by firmness; the cleanser is chosen by skin type. You pick one of each, and they are independent choices.
If you are new to the device and unsure how your skin will react, start with the Sensitive cleanser and a Gentle head. You can always move up.
Can you use more than one cleanser? Yes, and plenty of people do. Combination skin often suits different formulas at different times of day — Oily in the morning, Dry in the evening.
On the cleanser side of the rhythm: roughly a month at twice-daily use. Order the next one before you run out — the most common reason a routine stops is a bottle running dry on a busy week. Accent tips come as a twin pack in Blue or Rose Gold.

Which LumiSpa iO treatment head is best for sensitive skin?
The Gentle head. Nu Skin's own wording is "The Gentle treatment head is our gentlest choice and is great for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin." The Firm head is the one they specifically do not recommend for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Can I use an ordinary cleanser with the LumiSpa iO?
You can, but you lose the half of the product Nu Skin actually makes claims about — the treatment cleansers are the formulas the seven clinically proven skin benefits are attached to. An ordinary face wash also foams, which kills the glide the device depends on. If you are not going to use the matched cleansers, a cheaper device will serve you just as well and we would rather say so.
What if I'm between skin types?
Start with the formula closest to your main concern. Between Normal and Dry, start Normal and switch if you feel tightness. Between Normal and Oily, start Normal and switch if shine is not controlled.
Is the Sensitive formula less effective?
No. It cleanses and delivers the treatment just as well — it is simply formulated with gentler actives. Plenty of people without sensitive skin prefer it.
Do I need both the iO and the Accent?
No. The iO treats the face without the Accent, and plenty of people never buy one. The Accent exists because the skin around the eyes is thinner and the full-face device is not shaped for it.
Do I need IdealEyes to use the Accent?
Nu Skin writes the two as a pair — their IdealEyes directions say to massage each eye area using ageLOC LumiSpa Accent for 30 seconds. Their Accent description says you get even better results when you pair it with IdealEyes. Buying the Accent without the cream is buying half of what they describe.
