If you have been researching at-home facial cleansing devices you will have met the ageLOC LumiSpa iO. Here is what it is, what Nu Skin actually claims for it, and what we are no longer claiming on their behalf.
What is the ageLOC LumiSpa iO?
A smart facial cleansing and treatment device from Nu Skin. Their own summary: "Two minutes, twice a day is all it takes for award-winning ageLOC® LumiSpa® iO to deliver a smoother complexion, seven clinically proven skin benefits, and smart IoT technology that helps you personalize your routine."
The "iO" refers to the smart side — the device pairs with the Nu Skin Vera app for guided treatments and a record of what you have done.
How it works
Nu Skin's term for the technology is Micropulse Oscillation Technology, and they describe the movement as "counter-rotating, pore-purifying action" that "leaves skin smoother and purer". They also print that it "gently yet thoroughly cleanses away dirt, oil, makeup, and toxins" and "Doesn't disrupt skin's natural microbiome balance".
What they do not print is any comparison with cleansing by hand, and any claim that the device improves how well your other products absorb. This page used to carry that absorption claim. It has been removed.
The seven benefits
Nu Skin lists seven clinically proven skin benefits: softness, smoothness, radiance, clarity, purified skin, reduced pore appearance and visibly improved firmness. Alongside them they publish two figures from a 12-week study of the ageLOC LumiSpa System — "100% Visibly cleaner skin after week 12" and "40% Softer skin in just a week" — and the line "Instantly softer and smoother skin after one use".
Those are the only timings Nu Skin attaches to this device. An earlier version of this page promised visible results in two to four weeks; that was ours, and it has gone.
The treatment heads
Nu Skin sells three heads for the iO, plus the Accent for the eye area. In their words:
- "The Gentle treatment head is our gentlest choice and is great for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin."
- "The Normal treatment head is the standard choice and is designed for most skin types."
- "The Firm treatment head is for those who want the most aggressive experience but is not recommended for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin."
On the material: "Gentle, nonabrasive silicone surfaces contains antimicrobial silver and is more hygienic than brushes commonly used with other devices." On replacement: "a treatment head is designed to last for at least three months when used twice a day."

iO versus the original LumiSpa
The iO adds the app connection and the smart features. The cleansing technology is the same Micropulse Oscillation. Note that iO heads are not compatible with the original device.
