If you have been researching facial cleansing devices, you have almost certainly landed on a handful of names: the ageLOC LumiSpa iO, the Foreo Luna, a Clarisonic you are trying to replace, and NuFace. This page compares all four, plus the option of carrying on with your hands.
The short version
The honest answer is that these are not all the same kind of product, and that is the whole decision. One cleanses. One cleanses and treats. One is not a cleansing device at all. Everything below follows from that.

We have deliberately left prices, battery figures and cleansing percentages out of that table. Those numbers move, they vary by model and seller, and several of the ones quoted around the internet cannot be traced to either manufacturer. We would rather give you six rows you can rely on than nine you cannot. We also do not publish performance figures for devices we do not sell. Check each manufacturer's own materials for what they claim.
What Nu Skin actually claims for the LumiSpa iO
We do not paraphrase manufacturer claims. Here is Nu Skin's own wording, quoted from their US site:
"Award-winning ageLOC LumiSpa both treats and cleanses skin through its patented Micropulse Oscillation Technology, delivering seven clinically proven benefits for glowing, selfie-ready skin—all day, every day."
Those seven benefits, as Nu Skin lists them, are softness, smoothness, radiance, clarity, firmness, purified skin and reduced pore appearance. Nu Skin also prints "Instantly softer and smoother skin after one use" and says the device "Promotes dynamic skin renewal".
That is the complete set. If you see a page claiming the LumiSpa cleanses a specific number of times better than your hands, or promising a result at a particular number of weeks, that figure is not Nu Skin's — it is somebody's marketing. We used to have one of those numbers on this page ourselves, and we have taken it off.
What Nu Skin Does Not Claim
It is worth being explicit, because the gaps are where most of the bad information lives:
- No comparison with hands, washcloths or any other method. No multiplier, no percentage, no "removes X times more".
- No mechanism. Nu Skin names the technology — Micropulse Oscillation Technology — and stops there. Descriptions of counter-rotation, vortex action or calibrated frequencies are not Nu Skin's.
- No timeline. There is no four-week or eight-week promise. The only timing claim is "after one use" for softness and smoothness, and "amplify over time" for the rest.
- No collagen claim. The device is not claimed to stimulate collagen production.
- No microcirculation claim. Widely repeated, nowhere printed.
Nu Skin also publishes no comparison with Clarisonic, no cleansing multiplier, and no number of weeks after which to expect anything — so neither do we.
The real difference: treatment, not just cleansing
It is a treatment step, not just a cleansing step. This is the real distinction from a silicone brush, and it is Nu Skin's own framing: the device "both treats and cleanses". The treatment cleansers carry ageLOC ingredient technology, and Nu Skin's own benefit line for the cleansers is "Results intensify when used with ageLOC LumiSpa iO device." A Foreo Luna is a cleansing device. The LumiSpa is sold as a cleansing and treatment system. Whether that is worth the difference in price is a judgement, not a fact.
It enforces two minutes. Most people cleanse for as long as it takes to feel finished, which on a tired evening is not very long. A timed device removes that variable. This is an argument about human behaviour rather than about technology, and it is the one we find actually persuades people.
It is gentle enough for twice a day. Nu Skin's directions are two minutes, morning and night, and the device is claimed not to disrupt the skin's natural microbiome balance. Not every powered cleansing device is designed for that frequency.
Foreo Luna
The Foreo Luna is a cleansing device, and a good one. It uses T-Sonic pulsations to lift dirt, oil and makeup, and for people who want exactly that, it does the job with no fuss and no consumables to reorder.
The ageLOC LumiSpa iO is a different proposition. Nu Skin's own description is that it "both treats and cleanses" — the treatment happening at the same time as the cleanse, through the interchangeable silicone heads and the matched LumiSpa Treatment Cleanser. That is why the seven benefits Nu Skin lists go beyond cleanliness into texture, firmness and pore appearance.
We are not going to tell you one motor moves in a cleverer way than the other, because neither manufacturer publishes anything that would let us prove it.
Clarisonic — and what to know if you are replacing one
Clarisonic was discontinued in 2020, and its owners have been looking for a replacement ever since. The LumiSpa iO is the device we are asked about most often by people in exactly that position.
The clearest difference between the two devices is what touches your face. Clarisonic used bristle brush heads; the LumiSpa iO uses silicone. Nu Skin's own description of that head: "Gentle, nonabrasive silicone surfaces contains antimicrobial silver and is more hygienic than brushes commonly used with other devices."
The practical consequence is the one former Clarisonic owners tend to raise first: there are no bristles to trap residue, and nothing to build up between uses. Nu Skin states that "a treatment head is designed to last for at least three months when used twice a day."
Where the comparison runs out: Clarisonic was a cleansing device. Nu Skin describes the LumiSpa iO as one that "both treats and cleanses", and sells it as a system with a matched treatment cleanser rather than as a brush on its own. That is a real difference in what you are buying, and it is also an ongoing cost — the treatment cleanser is part of the routine, not an optional extra. Whether that trade is worth it depends on whether you wanted a cleansing device or a treatment step. If it was purely the former, say so to yourself before you spend the money.
If you are replacing a Clarisonic, start on the Normal head — Nu Skin calls it "the standard choice" and says it is "designed for most skin types". If your skin is sensitive or currently breaking out, start on Gentle instead; Nu Skin specifically does not recommend the Firm head for sensitive or acne-prone skin. NuFace — a different technology entirely
NuFace uses microcurrent technology — low-level electrical currents applied to the face. It is a separate category of device with its own usage schedule, and it does not cleanse.
In short: LumiSpa iO is a daily cleansing device. NuFace is a microcurrent device.
These devices aren't really competitors — they do different jobs. If you can only choose one, decide which of those two routines you'll actually keep up with. Use both if: you want both routines. They aren't interchangeable — one is a daily cleansing step, the other is a separate microcurrent session.

Cleansing with your hands
The option nobody sells you. Nu Skin makes no comparison with hands, so we cannot give you one either. What we can tell you is what you are buying: a timed two-minute routine, six matched treatment cleansers, and Nu Skin's claim of seven clinically proven skin benefits — softness, smoothness, radiance, clarity, firmness, purified skin and reduced pore appearance. If those are worth the price to you, it is worth it. If you will not use the matched cleansers, it probably is not.

Note what is not in that table: any claim about how deeply anything cleans. Nobody has published figures we can stand behind, so we have not invented any.
Where a Cheaper Option Is the Right Answer
We would rather say this than sell you the wrong thing:
- If you will not buy the matched cleansers, most of the argument above evaporates. The treatment half is the cleansers. Used with an ordinary foaming face wash, you have an expensive silicone brush — and the foam kills the glide besides.
- If your main concern is fine lines rather than cleansing, this is not the device for that job. Look at a serum first.
- If you are not going to use it twice a day, the claims that "amplify over time" are not going to amplify.
- If you have never worn sunscreen daily, start there. It costs a fraction as much and it is the change with the most behind it.
Who should choose which
Choose the LumiSpa iO if
- You want a device that does more than clean your face.
- You want to change the head to suit your skin rather than live with one fixed surface.
- You are already using, or curious about, the wider ageLOC range.
- You want the Vera app to keep track of your routine.
Choose the Foreo Luna if
- You want deep cleansing and nothing else.
- You would rather not buy a matched cleanser on an ongoing basis.
- You want one device that does one job with the minimum of fuss.
Choose NuFace if
- You specifically want a microcurrent device rather than a cleansing device.
Stay with your hands if
- You are not going to use a device twice a day, or you will not buy the matched cleansers.
- Your budget is better spent on daily sunscreen first.
Common questions
Is the LumiSpa iO better than the Foreo Luna?
They do different jobs. The Foreo Luna cleanses. Nu Skin describes the LumiSpa iO as a device that "both treats and cleanses". If you only want cleansing, the comparison is closer than the price difference suggests. If you want the treatment side, the Foreo does not offer it.
How is the LumiSpa iO different from a Foreo Luna or other silicone brush?
The honest difference is what the cleanser does, not what the motor does. Nu Skin sells the LumiSpa as a device that "both treats and cleanses", with the treatment cleansers carrying ageLOC ingredient technology; a silicone brush is a cleansing device used with whatever wash you already own. There is also app connectivity through the Nu Skin Vera app.
Can I use the LumiSpa iO with my own cleanser?
It is designed to be used with Nu Skin's LumiSpa cleansers, which are formulated to work with the device. Another cleanser will still clean your face, but you are no longer using the system as designed.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
There are different treatment heads and different cleanser formulations in the range, including options intended for more reactive skin. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, ask your dermatologist before adding any new device to your routine — that is a question for them, not for us.
How often should I use the LumiSpa iO?
