Most anti-aging products work on what you can see — lines, dullness, loss of firmness. ageLOC is Nu Skin's name for a different approach: an ingredient platform built around gene expression rather than around surface symptoms. Here is what that means, what the range contains, and what we are no longer claiming for it.
A correction, stated plainly
Until today this page said that Nu Skin's ageLOC research was conducted in collaboration with Stanford University and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. That was not true, and we could not find any basis for it. It appeared in four places on this page and it has been removed from all of them.
We are saying so rather than deleting it quietly, because naming real research institutions in support of a product is the most serious thing a page like this can get wrong.
What ageLOC is
ageLOC is Nu Skin's ingredient platform, organised around Youth Gene Clusters — their own term for groups of genes whose expression patterns shift with age. The underlying idea is that aging is a regulated biological process rather than only accumulated damage, and that the regulatory layer is where an intervention could sit.
The research behind it was done with LifeGen Technologies, the genomics company Nu Skin worked with on gene expression profiling. That partnership is real and is the one we can point at.
Youth Gene Clusters
Nu Skin describes Youth Gene Clusters across three functional categories:
- Cellular energy — genes regulating mitochondrial function and ATP production
- Cellular purification — genes regulating the clearance of damaged proteins and cellular debris
- Cellular renewal — genes regulating cell turnover and tissue renewal

The devices
The ageLOC LumiSpa iO is the flagship. Nu Skin: "Two minutes, twice a day is all it takes for award-winning ageLOC® LumiSpa® iO to deliver a smoother complexion, seven clinically proven skin benefits, and smart IoT technology that helps you personalize your routine." The seven benefits, as they list them: softness, smoothness, radiance, clarity, purified skin, reduced pore appearance and visibly improved firmness.
This page used to say the device drives actives into the skin and that most people see change in one to two weeks. Nu Skin claims neither, so both have gone. What they do print is "Instantly softer and smoother skin after one use".
The ageLOC RenuSpa iO uses patent-pending Adaptive Microcurrent Technology. Nu Skin: "Visibly contour, tone, and firm skin through skin stimulation." It is microcurrent, not galvanic, and it does not cleanse. It needs Nu Skin Conductive Gel — which is a different product from Enhancer Skin Conditioning Gel.

The supplements
ageLOC Youth is the Pharmanex supplement built around the Youth Gene Cluster research. ageLOC R2 Night + Day is a two-part system, taken at different times of day; the halves are sold separately as R2 Vitality (Day) and R2 Night. ageLOC alongside conventional anti-aging
Retinoids, peptides, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid all work on the downstream effects of aging. ageLOC is aimed further upstream. It complements the conventional approach rather than replacing it — and sunscreen and retinoids remain the two best-evidenced interventions available, whatever else is in your routine.

Is ageLOC legitimate science or marketing?
Both elements are present, and the distinction is worth keeping. That gene expression changes with age is well established in the general literature, independent of any company. "Youth Gene Cluster" is Nu Skin's own term for the specific gene set its researchers mapped with LifeGen Technologies, and the ingredient screening and formulations are proprietary. For what any individual product is claimed to do, we point you at Nu Skin's own material rather than expanding on it.
How long before I see results?
We are not going to give you a number. This page used to say one to two weeks for texture, two to three months for firmness, and four to twelve weeks for supplements — all invented here. The only timings Nu Skin prints for the LumiSpa iO are "Instantly softer and smoother skin after one use" and benefits that "amplify over time".
